A guided walkthrough

Use your first AI skill

If you can copy and paste, you can do this. Nothing to install, nothing to buy, about five minutes.

The skill: getting AI to explain something confusing in everyday words. It is one prompt, it works in a free tool, and it turns the fine print of daily life into plain English plus what to do next.

Pick the thing that has been bugging you

  • A letter you keep re-reading An insurance statement, a bank notice, a letter from the county. You have read it three times and still are not sure what it wants from you.
  • Something you are about to sign A lease, a quote, a contractor agreement. You would like to know what is actually in it before your name goes on it.
  • A form whose instructions assume too much Tax paperwork, a benefits enrollment, a permit application. The instructions were written by someone who already knows how.
  • A topic everyone mentions and nobody explains Crypto, HSAs, why your electric bill has nine line items. You would ask, but everyone acts like you already know.

The walkthrough below uses the first one, a confusing letter. The steps are the same for all of them. Only the thing you paste changes.

Explain a confusing letter, start to finish

What it doesYou give AI the letter. It gives you back what the letter says, what it means for you, and what to do next, in everyday words.

The toolChatGPT (free, no account needed) or Claude (free, quick sign-in). Both work the same way for this.

  1. Get the confusing thing in front of you

Dig out the letter, email, or document. If it is an email or a PDF, you will copy its text in a minute. If it is on paper, no problem: you can photograph it with your phone instead.

  2. Open a free AI tool

In your web browser, open one of these. You will see a message box you can type in, like a text message.

  3. Copy this prompt

Tap the green button. The whole prompt is now on your clipboard.

Explain this like I'm a 5th grader, using everyday examples and no jargon, then explain any next steps: [PASTE THE CONFUSING THING HERE]

The [highlighted] parts are your blanks. Swap them after you paste.

  4. Paste, then add your letter

Click into the message box and paste. Then put your letter where the highlighted part is: paste its text, or attach a photo of the paper with the plus or camera button. Hit send.

  5. Read it, then keep asking

The plain-English version comes back in seconds. If any part is still fuzzy, reply like you would to a person: "What does the second part mean?" or "What should I say when I call them?" It remembers the conversation.

One habit worth keeping: leave out things like your Social Security number or account numbers. The explanation is just as good without them.

Where to go from here

That was one skill. There is a whole shelf of them, and none is harder than what you just did.
