The Claude plan on your Mac
BrainThang runs on the Claude account already signed in on the Mac. No new keys, no second bill. This is the setup we recommend and install most.
Your own API key
A pay-as-you-go key we set up for you. The business pays for exactly what it uses, on its own account, and the key lives in your settings, not ours.
A model you run yourself
Any model that speaks the common OpenAI format, on your own Mac or a service you pick. Choose a local model and switch web access off, and questions never leave the machine.
Whichever you pick, your files live in the folder on your Mac. A cloud model is sent what it needs to answer your question; a local model keeps even that at home. Every engine follows the same rules: it stays inside your folder and it cites its sources.

Do I need to be technical to use it?
No. It is a chat. You type, or click one of the big shortcut buttons. The app greets each person by name and offers first steps, and setup happens with us, in person.
What does it run on?
A Mac with Apple silicon (the M-series chips, 2020 and later). It is one app, and the brain it manages is a normal folder on that Mac.
What happens to my files if we stop using it?
Nothing. The brain is plain, readable files the whole way through. Open them without the app, back them up your way, keep everything.
Can my whole team use it?
Yes. Everyone signs in with their own name and password, sees only the folders their role allows, and keeps their own chats. The owner decides who can see what and who can add files. The owner can even put the business's name on the sign-in screen and the sidebar.
Which AI is it using?
Your pick: the Claude plan on the Mac, a pay-as-you-go key, or another model, local or hosted. Switchable in settings, and every choice follows the same rules about staying inside your folder and citing its sources.
